Cut out the failed section, rebuild the base, and fill with hot mix so the repair stays put
Asphalt patching and pothole repair is for a pavement that is mostly sound with a few failed sections. A pothole at the gutter, a broken bay in a car park, a soft patch where a truck parks. We cut the failed area square, check what is underneath, and fill it with hot mix so it bonds to the edges instead of popping out.

Wet or broken base comes out and is replaced with compacted road base.

Edges are tack coated, hot mix goes in, and it is compacted level with the surface around it.
A pothole is usually water that got into the base. Filling it from a bag fixes the hole for a few weeks. A proper patch cuts back to solid pavement, digs out the wet or broken base, rebuilds and compacts it, tacks the edges, then fills with hot mix and compacts it level with the surface around it.
When the patches start to join up, patching is the wrong job. At that point a full resurface costs less over the life of the pavement, and we will tell you so.
